In 1845, Ferdinand A. Lange established the first manufactory for pocket watches in Glashütte. For over 100 years, the manufactory crafted time-keeping instruments distinguished by utmost precision, superb craftsmanship, and technical innovation. The impeccable maintenance and restoration of these watches is among the most honourable tasks assigned to specially trained Lange master watchmakers.
PRECISION, PERFECTION, AND ORIGINALITY.
A historic Lange watch is not just an exclusive timepiece – each one also represents a piece of cultural heritage. In its maintenance or restoration, the aim is therefore always to preserve as much as possible of its original substance.
On the other hand, a restored timepiece should also be in perfect visual and technical condition – as though it had been crafted only yesterday. Since original replacement parts are usually not available, a defective component may need to be newly crafted on the basis of historic models and traditional techniques. Because in every restoration, it is also one of the objectives to preserve the character and identity of a Lange watch.
THE METICULOUS RESTORATION OF A HISTORIC LANGE WATCH.
To restore a Lange watch, it first needs to be submitted to the master watchmakers at the Lange manufactory for examination. Only if the historic timepiece actually contains a Lange movement and an original Lange precious-metal case, can the meticulous act of restoration begin.
In this process, it is possible to restore both the movement and case, and to thoroughly clean the dial. Because replacement parts may need to be individually crafted, restoration is a highly elaborate procedure that may last up to 12 months. After restoration to mint condition, a certificate is issued for the Lange pocket watch.
