THE TRADITION OF THE FUSÉE-AND-CHAIN MECHANISM.
The fusée-and-chain transmission assures that the going train of a mechanical watch is driven by the same amount of torque regardless of the state of wind of the mainspring. This improves the rate accuracy of the movement. For this reason, the complicated construction was used mainly in the high-precision marine chronometers as well as in the scientific pocket chronometers crafted by A. Lange & Söhne starting at about 1880 when Richard Lange was the manufactory’s technical director.
A newly developed fusée-and-chain mechanism is integrated in the RICHARD LANGE “Pour le Mérite”, in the TOURBOGRAPH “Pour le Mérite”, and in the TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite”. It is composed of more than 700 individual parts that had to be accommodated in the much smaller dimensions of these wristwatches.
