Lange's outsize date was the first mechanism of its kind for wristwatches to offer an extraordinarily large and highly legible date display. After the 31st of each month, it automatically switches to the 1st of the following month. Thanks to this useful mechanism, the size of the date display - depending on the model - can be up to five times larger than in conventional watches.
