Procedure

The F. A. Lange Scholarship and Watchmaking Excellence Award is made up of two suc-cessive parts:

  • Part 1, Workshop in May: As part of the F. A. Lange Scholarship, participants will be given an exclusive insight into certain departments of the manufactory and learn about precision watchmaking at Lange.
  • Part 2, Competition that runs until October: On the last day of the workshop week, the competition task that is to be completed for the F. A. Lange Watchmaking Excellence Award will be announced. The participants will then have around five months to come up with a solution for the constructive task. Lange will provide the base calibre. The works must be submitted to Lange by the end of October and they will then be evaluated by a jury of experts according to the following criteria: originality and innovative character of the idea, functionality, technical and artisanal quality and aesthetic quality of the execution.

Awards ceremony: The awards ceremony will take place at the end of the year. The name of the winner and their school will be publicly announced and the winner will receive 10,000 euros in prize money.

Applications

The call for applications is aimed at watchmaking schools worldwide that can recommend one watchmaking student from their institution by 31 March. The competition is mainly intended for trainees in their penultimate year. Participants should have produced out-standing work during their training, display a marked talent for creative design and be capable of completing demanding projects independently. In addition, good knowledge of English is a requirement for participation. Upon submission of the application, the watchmaking school states that it agrees to the trainee taking part in both parts of the pro-ject (workshop and competition). Furthermore, the school has to make sure that the appli-cant will be released from classes during the workshop week. As the number of places is limited, Lange Uhren GmbH reserves the right to make the final selection of participants.

Application documents

The watchmaking school must submit the following documents by 31 March:

  • an application form completed and signed by the applicant
  • a photo (headshot) of the applicant and their CV
  • the applicant’s latest school report
