CONCORSO D’ELEGANZA VILLA D’ESTE

19th - 21st May 2023

CLASSICS THAT LEAD THE WAY

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is considered one of the most exclusive events for rare historical vehicles. The international automobile competition, awarding the best-preserved classic cars, is held annually on Lake Como and will take place from 19th to 21st May this year. A. Lange & Söhne has been involved as a partner since 2012 and will once again donate the winner’s prize for the “Best of Show” award.

When, on the third weekend in May, some of the most fascinating vehicles of all time arrive in Cernobbio, northern Italy, they are sure to once again stop those present in their tracks. This prestigious and historically significant competition brings together historical automobiles and motorcycles to be admired and judged. This year, the event, jointly organised by BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, includes eight categories representing the entire spectrum of automotive history.

THE FASCINATION OF FINE AUTOMOBILES AND HIGH-END TIMEPIECES

The unique atmosphere of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este offers a worthy setting for the presentation of mechanical masterpieces. Delving deeper, one will discover that there are many parallels between mechanical timepieces and classic vehicles. A shared passion is reflected in the freedom of expression, the independence to forge new paths and the determination to make the best possible use of time.

This pioneering spirit is a recurring theme throughout the history of our manufactory. More than 175 years ago, the manufactory’s founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange realised his vision of turning the remote village of Glashütte into the centre of German precision watchmaking. After the reunification of Germany, his great-grandson, Walter Lange, perpetuated this vision by rebuilding the company of his ancestors and entering uncharted horological territories with traditional craftsmanship, continuing to aim for the ultimate.

A ONE-OF-A-KIND TIMEPIECE FOR THE WINNER

This also applies to the manufacture calibre L951.5, which reflects the historical link between motorsports and time measurement with its column-wheel control, a stepped snail for the precisely jumping minute counter, and a flyback function. The manually wound movement, first presented in 2010, also powers the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH in white gold, which our watchmakers especially created for the winner of the Trofeo BMW Group “Best of Show”. The hand-engraved Concorso coat of arms on the hinged cuvette makes the chronograph one of a kind.

As part of the awards ceremony on Sunday evening, Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid will present the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH to the overall winner. “Like the works of art on wheels exhibited here, the timepiece combines classic design with virtuoso mechanics,” explains Wilhelm Schmid. “It is a token of our admiration for automotive works of art that were way ahead of their time, and for their owners, who take care of them with a passion to preserve the timeless elegance of the mechanics.”

At the award ceremony, Wilhelm Schmid presented the exclusive one-off piece to William Lyon, who, with his Duesenberg SJ Speedster Gurney Nutting from the year 1935, was the favourite of the jury as well as the public and was visibly pleased with the unique timepiece featuring a solid pink-gold dial and hand-engraved hinged cuvette.

FLYBACK MECHANISM
The precisely jumping minute counter and the flyback function have been two features of Lange chronographs since 1999.
FINISHING AND ENGRAVING
FINISHING AND ENGRAVING
The art of finishing movements ranks high in our manufacture. No matter whether large or infinitesimal, whether clearly visible or hidden, almost every part is decorated by hand. Different techniques are used: every component is assigned its own individual type of finish, the sum total a harmonious overall appearance.
