SAXONIA

Discreet elegance

In an inimitable way, the models of the SAXONIA watch family embody the origins of A. Lange & Söhne. They unite many of the values that are associated with the hometown of the manufacture. Crafted in Germany, they combine lucid, functional design, engineering artistry and inventiveness.

With its Latin name SAXONIA, the watch family refers to the region of Saxony, located in the eastern part of Germany. The close historic ties between A. Lange & Söhne and the Saxon Royal Court in the 19th century come to the fore today in many different aspects: in the artisanal effort invested in every single movement, the attention that we devote to even the smallest detail and the characteristic elegance that every model radiates.

The SAXONIA watch family also incarnates the creativity, diligence and passion of our watchmakers, thus mirroring the spirit of the manufacture’s location Glashütte, the hub of precision watchmaking in Germany.

One watch family ‒ three design concepts

The first SAXONIA made its debut in 1994. It was one of four watches making up the first collection that was presented in the Dresden Royal Palace, following the re-establishment of the manufacture.

Today, the SAXONIA watch family comprises three watch ranges, each with a distinctive personality: the sleek, elegant timepieces, the trailblazing DATOGRAPH models and last but certainly not least, the challenging complications. Together, they epitomise the impressive scope of our watchmaking and design skills.

Discreet elegance

These timepieces focus on the essential functions of a mechanical watch and merge optimised legibility with understated elegance. They are timeless paragons of purity thanks to the lucid dial configuration. It is precisely in these seemingly simple watches that our watchmakers concentrate on perfecting each and every detail; this includes, for instance, the exact and intricate refining of the baton appliques and their manually polished chamfers. Additionally, slender cases and lugs give these models a particularly elegant air of lightness.

It is with the same dedication that our watchmakers apply themselves to the mechanical hearts of these timepieces – the elaborately finished movements that are assembled twice. Here, the focus is on traditional elements such as plates and bridges, decorated with Glashütte ribbing, blued screws or hand-engraved balance cocks: their artisanal perfection can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback. In addition, all the other components, clearly visible or concealed deep within the movement, are adorned with special decorations and polishes.

The trailblazing DATOGRAPH

The first DATOGRAPH was launched in 1999, incorporating the manufacture’s first chronograph movement ‒ developed and crafted in-house. To date, it is still the benchmark in the discipline of chronograph construction+. The DATOGRAPH paved the way for many other extraordinary chronographs designed by the manufacture: they represent our ambition to transcend horological boundaries and to explore new avenues. Its name is derived from the combination of the typical Lange outsize date and the chronograph function.

The DATOGRAPH range of models is characterised by its striking, individual design. On the optimally balanced dial, the outsize date and the two subsidiary dials that were moved downwards slightly form an equilateral triangle.

Not only do the movements distinguish themselves with a unique aesthetic appeal ‒ they also showcase a multitude of technical intricacies as exemplified by the precisely jumping minute counter or the flyback function. Thanks to these hallmarks, the DATOGRAPH models are highly coveted among collectors.

Sophisticated complications

In the third model range of the SAXONIA watch family, our watchmakers were confronted with particularly formidable construction and artisanal issues. Some of these highly complex timepieces even incorporate several complications at once.

The MINUTE REPEATER PERPETUAL constitutes a pertinent example of this. It unites a perpetual calendar and a minute repeater, both concealed beneath an enamel dial, crafted in-house. Each one of these complications alone represents a technical feat in itself, the fusion of the two, however, poses an even greater challenge. This holds true for the engineers as well as the watchmakers and finisseurs.

Moreover, this model range comprises several timepieces that question the existing conventions in precision watchmaking and redefine the boundaries of micromechanical engineering. The TRIPLE SPLIT, for instance, takes the rattrapante function to a whole new level: with its triple-rattrapante mechanism for seconds, minutes and hours, it allows comparative and intermediate measurements of up to twelve hours for the first time.

The art of finishing movements ranks high in our manufacture. No matter whether large or infinitesimal, whether clearly visible or hidden, almost every part is decorated by hand.
