Record price for unique A. Lange & Söhne timepiece
At the highly anticipated charity auction on 6 November 2022 in Geneva, the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH “Hampton Court Edition” was auctioned off for 1,058,500 CHF (1,064,851 EUR; incl. buyer’s premium) by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo. This is the highest result at auction that a Lange wristwatch has ever achieved. The proceeds will go to the British charity The Prince’s Trust, which supports young people in realising their potential and building a future for themselves.

Watchmaking for a good cause
The 1815 CHRONOGRAPH “Hampton Court Edition” was not only created to meet the highest watchmaking standards, but also to make a difference in society. The unique timepiece was presented for the first time at the Concours of Elegance near London in early September and auctioned by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo in Geneva on 6 November. The proceeds of the one-of-a-kind 18-carat white-gold piece with a solid-silver dial and hand-engraved hinged cuvette will go to The Prince’s Trust. Founded by King Charles III in 1976, the charity’s mission is to help young people aged 11 to 30 to develop essential life skills, prepare for work and access employment opportunities.
The case of the timepiece is made of 18-carat white gold and is enhanced by a black dial with sandstone-coloured numerals. The dark background makes the silver dials of the subsidiary seconds and the minute counter, both with rhodiumed steel hands, as well as the gold hands for the hours and minutes stand out prominently and guarantees the best possible legibility.
The classic design is finished off with the hand-engraved hinged cuvette. It features a detailed engraving of the Concours of Elegance logo, which takes several days to complete using a flat burin.
Beneath the hinged cuvette and visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the Lange calibre L951.5 with column-wheel control, a snail for the precisely jumping minute counter and flyback function works with the highest precision.
A large cam-poised balance wheel driven by a freely oscillating balance spring manufactured in-house assures superior rate accuracy. Because it beats at a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz), the watch delivers readings of stopped times with an accuracy of one-fifth of a second.
