THE ART OF WATCHMAKING

Discover how Lange timepieces are crafted by hand

Our craft is characterised by tradition. It can be found in classical elements as well as sophisticated watchmaking complications. For example, all our balance cocks are engraved by hand. Each engraver has their own personal style, making each timepiece unique. Even parts that lie inside the movement are bevelled, polished and engraved. From the classic model with only two hands to large complications, each timepiece is finished to perfection. All this culminates in our HANDWERKSKUNST models. And there is another step in the manufacturing process that goes into every Lange watch – the twofold assembly. With an A. Lange & Söhne, you are not only acquiring an exceptional timepiece, but also several hours of elaborate craftsmanship.

Influenced by Walter Lange's motto “There is something one should expect not only of a watch but also of oneself: to never stand still.”, nothing seems impossible for our watchmakers. This is apparent by the many patents and advanced designs that have revolutionised fine watchmaking. Like the TRIPLE SPLIT – the world's first mechanical rattrapante chronograph that allows comparative time measurements over several hours, accurate to the sixth of a second.

Discover all the details about finishing and manufacturing as well as the complexity of our timepieces here.

Manufacture movements

Every A. Lange & Söhne timepiece is equipped with a manufacture movement. To be more precise: all calibres are developed, crafted, finished and assembled in our manufacture in Glashütte. Because it is our clear commitment to exclusively use our own movements.

Finishing and engraving

The art of finishing movements ranks high in our manufacture. No matter whether large or infinitesimal, whether clearly visible or hidden, almost every part is decorated by hand. Different techniques are used: every component is assigned its own individual type of finish, the sum total a harmonious overall appearance.

Twofold assembly

Be it a simple model or a highly sophisticated timepiece – at A. Lange & Söhne, every movement is assembled twice.

Traditional elements

Traditional style and design hallmarks typify A. Lange & Söhne timepieces and imbue them with inimitable charisma.

Jumping numerals mechanism

The ZEITWERK is a mechanically driven digital-display watch.
Three-quarter plate
Three-quarter plate
The three-quarter plate that dates back to Ferdinand Adolph Lange ranks among the typical hallmarks of A. Lange & Söhne timepieces.
Lange balance spring
Lange balance spring
Crafting a balance spring is one of the most complicated tasks in precision watchmaking, one that only very few manufactures master.
The art of enamelling
The art of enamelling
Crafting an enamel dial is very complex, requires several days of work, and calls for the utmost in precision.

Making the ODYSSEUS

The ODYSSEUS by A. Lange & Söhne – and how it is created.
The fusée-and-chain transmission
The fusée-and-chain transmission
The fusée-and-chain transmission is one of the most effective complications when it comes to increasing the rate accuracy of a mechanical watch.
Calendar function
Calendar function
Lange models incorporate either annual calendars or perpetual calendars.
Chronograph
Chronograph
Chronographs and their manufacture movements have been flagship products of A. Lange & Söhne since 1999.

Outsize date

The A. Lange & Söhne outsize date enables a date display with digits around three times as large as those in watches of comparable dimensions.
Constant-force escapement
Constant-force escapement
The purpose of a constant-force escapement in a mechanical watch is to provide the escapement with a consistent flow of power, regardless of whether the watch is fully wound or nearly unwound.
Striking mechanisms
Striking mechanisms
Watches with a minute repeater or other striking mechanisms make time audible. Given their horological intricacy, these models are among the most elaborate and rare timepieces in the realm of precision watchmaking.
Moon-phase display
Moon-phase display
Most of our moon-phase displays reproduce the moon’s orbit with a precision of 99.998 per cent.

Double and triple rattrapante mechanism

A double or triple rattrapante mechanism allows comparative or lap-time measurements of events that last as long as twelve hours.
Power-reserve indicator
Power-reserve indicator
The UP/DOWN display reminds the owner to rewind the watch before it stops running.
Decorated timepieces
Decorated timepieces
Timepieces with a decorative extra.
Handwerkskunst editions
Handwerkskunst editions
Since 2011, our HANDWERKSKUNST models have been taking the finissage of cases, movements, and dials to a new level of excellence.

Tourbillon watches

The tourbillon improves the rate accuracy of a mechanical timepiece by overcoming the influence of gravity on the running of a watch.
Zero-reset mechanism
Zero-reset mechanism
With the ZERO-RESET mechanism, the movement stops and the seconds hand jumps to zero when the crown is pulled.
Flyback mechanism
Flyback mechanism
The precisely jumping minute counter and the flyback function have been two features of Lange chronographs since 1999.
Jumping seconds mechanism
Jumping seconds mechanism
The mechanism of the jumping second assures unambiguous readings at any time, because it advances the large seconds hand by exactly 60 steps per minute.

Decimal minute repeater

The ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER couples the strikework with a digital display, relying on the principle of the jumping numerals mechanism.
