An A. Lange & Söhne watchmaker carefully assembles the small parts of a movement.

Welcome to our service area! We are delighted that you have chosen a Lange watch. On the following pages, you will find information on maintaining and repairing your timepiece as well as the guarantee services.

Care and handling of timepiece

Care and handling

Your Lange watch is a valuable precision instrument consisting of a large number of filigree individual parts. With the right handling and maintenance, your timepiece will function as perfectly as on the first day for many years to come.

Maintenance and repair

To preserve the precision, the value and the beauty of your timepiece for many generations, we recommend you have your watch overhauled every five to seven years. As part of this process, the individual parts of the movement are carefully examined and, if necessary, restored to their original condition.

Guarantee-information-and-documents-booklet

Guarantee information and documents

Each Lange watch is accompanied by what is known as “The History of Your Watch” booklet. It acts as both a guarantee document as well as a maintenance history for your watch. In this way, the history of your A. Lange & Söhne can be traced back completely at any time.

Watch-registration-teaser

Watch registration

We cordially invite you to register your Lange watch. To help identify your watch, please have to hand your case and movement number, which you will find on the back side of your watch.

Register your lost or stolen watch

Enquirus.com aims to reduce and if possible, eliminate the theft of luxury watches and associated fraud. All watches manufactured with a unique identifier (serial number) can be registered on this free of charge and user-friendly platform. In turn, the database is a useful tool for law enforcement agencies dealing with suspicious watches and anyone purchasing a pre-owned watch.

FAQ

    • Different displays have to be set depending on which model you have chosen. You will find a detailed explanation in the operating instructions that you received with your watch. In order to protect the filigree mechanics from unintentional operating errors, patented protective mechanisms are used in some of our movements. Nevertheless, we recommend that you read the operating instructions carefully before setting your watch for the first time.

If you already registered your watch some time ago, please contact our customer service team – stating your watch model and the reference number – who will be happy to provide you with the link.

You have not yet registered your watch? You can register here.

    • Depending on the age of your watch, we can offer you new documents in most cases. For registered customers we can also provide the operating instructions for many models in digital form. Please contact our customer service team stating your watch model and reference number.

    • Your Lange watch is a valuable precision instrument consisting of a large number of filigree individual parts. To ensure that your timepiece functions as perfectly as on the first day, we recommend that you follow a few instructions:

Prior to delivery, your Lange watch is checked for water resistance at a pressure of 3 bar. This ensures that it is protected against splash water and comparable water contact. Nevertheless, your watch is not suitable for wearing while swimming or in the sauna, for example – also with regard to the high-quality alligator leather strap. Avoid contact of the strap with oily substances or solvents and cleaning agents to prevent discoloration and premature material aging.

Our new ODYSSEUS is exposed to a test pressure of 12 bar. Thus, you can wear the watch while showering, swimming and jumping into the water (no high diving). The water resistance of the watch is only guaranteed as long as the crown is screwed down and the buttons are in their home positions. We recommend that you have your ODYSSEUS tested for leaktightness once a year.

Your Lange watch is not indestructible. Please keep this in mind if you work as a craftsman or play sports. Do not expose your watch to abrupt temperature fluctuations, intense UV radiation or strong magnetic fields. Avoid violent shocks and vibrations.

If you rarely wear the watch, we recommend that you wind it from time to time or – in the case of a model with automatic winding – rotate it on a watch winder to ensure lubrication of the mechanism.

The best way to clean the watch is to use the microfibre cloth supplied.

    • The operating instructions are included with your watch. You will find them together with “The History of Your Watch” booklet in the case that accompanies the watch box.

    • The guarantee documents are included with your watch. You will find the guarantee seal or the guarantee card on the first page of “The History of Your Watch” booklet in the case that accompanies the watch box.

    • In contrast to watches with manual winding, automatic watches have a rotating centrifugal mass which – following the force of gravity – automatically winds the mainspring. The self-winding mechanism of a Lange watch is dimensioned in such a way that the loss of power reserve during the night is at least compensated for during the day with normal wearing habits. Please note that an automatic watch can only wind itself when it is worn or rotated on a watch winder.

Alternatively, you can wind your automatic watch manually. Watches with manual winding must be wound by turning the crown clockwise (in the non-extended position). Further information can also be found in the operating instructions for your Lange watch.

    • If your watch is a model with manual winding, turn the crown clockwise in its normal position (non-extended) to wind the mainspring. The watch is fully wound when you feel a clear resistance when turning the crown. At this point, please turn the crown back about one revolution. This relaxes the strain on the winding mechanism when the mainspring is fully wound.

If you turn the crown anti-clockwise, nothing will happen except that you can hear soft clicks. The best rate accuracy is achieved if you rewind your watch before it runs out completely.

Automatic watches have a rotating centrifugal mass which automatically winds the mainspring. Please note that your watch can only wind itself when it is worn or rotated on a watch winder. The automatic winding mechanism of a Lange watch is dimensioned in such a way that the loss of power reserve during the night is at least compensated for during the day with normal wearing habits. If you want to put your watch back into operation for the first time or after a long period of disuse, we recommend that you create a sufficient initial power reserve by turning the winding crown about 20 times. If you want to wind your automatic watch completely by hand, please note that there is no noticeable resistance in the mainspring barrel when you reach full winding due to the friction clutch.

    • The power reserve of your Lange watch depends on the model and, if applicable, on the use of additional functions - e.g. stop-time measurements or the use of a striking mechanism. You will find the specific information about your watch in the operating instruction.

To ensure a high level of accuracy, we recommend winding the watch before it has run out completely. If you rarely wear the watch, we recommend that you wind it up from time to time or, in the case of automatic watches, rotate it on a watch winder to ensure lubrication of the mechanism.

    • Despite elaborate surface treatment of all individual parts and careful lubrication with resin-free, synthetic oils and greases, every mechanical watch is subject to wear. We therefore recommend an overhaul every five to seven years. All parts of the movement are cleaned and replaced if necessary, the lubricant is renewed and the watch is fine-tuned again.

    • It is considered an overhaul if the watch is serviced within the scope of normal wear and tear. The complete movement is checked, dismantled and cleaned, and the lubricants, seals and wearing parts are replaced.

If malfunctions occur due to external influences such as impact or penetration of water, these are rectified as part of a repair. Thanks to the mechanical construction, the high-quality materials and the skill of our watchmakers, virtually every Lange watch can be repaired.

    • During the overhaul of the movement, the movement is stripped, i.e. the case is opened and the hands and dial are lifted off. The movement undergoes the overhaul process; afterwards it is reinserted into the case and a water-resistance and function test is carried out.

Optionally, you can also have the case and buckle refurbished. For the case overhaul, scratches and notches are refilled and polished with the material corresponding to your watch, so that the exterior of your watch also shines with renewed splendour.

    • Our Service Price Calculator will give you an estimate of the expected costs for servicing your watch.

    • Service consists of two components: movement overhaul and case overhaul. In the case of maintenance service, the case overhaul is usually optional; in the case of a repair, for example in the case of impact or fall damage, the case overhaul may be absolutely necessary to restore the watch’s functionality.

You can find more information about the process and the components of the service here.

    • The cost estimate usually consists of necessary and optional services. By necessary services we mean work which is indispensable for the restoration and/or for the preservation of the functionality. This work cannot be declined, as otherwise we cannot give a service guarantee on the overhaul or repair carried out.

Optional services often include aesthetic work on the watch, such as case refurbishment, or refer to preventive measures.

Every watch that comes in for service is different. Your authorised Lange dealer or boutique will be happy to answer any individual questions you may have.

    • Submitting a Lange watch to an authorized Lange dealer or boutique for overhaul is the easiest and most convenient way to perfect service.

    • During maintenance or repair, your Lange watch is completely disassembled, cleaned and, after completion of all work, checked for accuracy, functionality and water-resistance for several days – up to one week. You will not receive your Lange watch back until all quality controls have been passed. This usually happens after twelve weeks plus shipping time. The overhaul time for complex models is 15 weeks plus transport. You can then rely on Lange’s typical precision and quality for years to come.

Please note that due to the current situation, longer processing times for revisions and repairs in our service centers are to be expected.

    • If you have returned your watch to a Lange boutique or an authorized Lange dealer, you will receive further information about the status of your service order, e.g. whether the watch has already arrived at the nearest service centre, whether the diagnosis and, if applicable, the cost estimate have been made and whether the watch is already on its way back to you.

As soon as a cost estimate is available or the watch is ready for collection, you will of course be contacted directly by the dealer or the boutique, who will be happy to answer any further questions you may have.

    • If we have not managed to return your watch to your complete satisfaction, we will of course do so as soon as possible. In this case, photograph your watch and describe the problem to your contact at the Lange boutique or your Lange dealer. Sometimes a solution is also possible without sending in the watch; otherwise your contact person will take care of a new service.

    • Every Lange watch built since 1990 is accepted by us for repair or overhaul. The costs for maintenance can be found on our price schedule. You can confirm these directly when you hand in your watch. If a more complex repair outside the guarantee is necessary which exceeds the approved costs, we will provide you with an individual cost estimate before starting the work.

    • The assembly and finishing of a Lange watch sometimes takes many weeks and, depending on the degree of complication, can only be carried out by a few watchmakers. Even improper opening of the watch can cause serious damage to the movement.

Therefore, the overhaul or repair of a Lange watch may only be carried out by our service centre or by the few authorized service partners. Only they are therefore authorized to order the spare parts necessary for a repair.

A new strap for your Lange watch is available from all Lange boutiques and authorized Lange dealers. You can also order custom-made products there and, as a rule, have your strap replaced on-site.

    • If you cannot attribute the limited functionality directly to an incident such as a fall that is likely to result in necessary service, we recommend that you first contact your Lange boutique or an authorized Lange dealer. You can also contact us via our service form and describe the issue so that we can help you determine the next steps.

    • Your Lange watch is guaranteed for 24 months from the date of purchase. For a watch you have purchased from a Lange boutique and registered with us, the boutique offers an additional one-year guarantee. For a maintenance or repair outside the guarantee period, we grant a new 24-month guarantee.

    • To prove that a watch is a real A. Lange & Söhne, the service team can, on request, provide proof of origin for timepieces manufactured after 1990. For this certificate (for a charge), the timepiece must be sent to a Lange boutique.

    • The market value of your Lange watch depends on numerous factors; you can obtain the best assessments in this regard from an auction house. We recommend that you contact an auction house with experience in the auctioning of precision mechanical watches, if necessary also in an international context.

    • In the event that the guarantee documents are lost, the condition of the watch in question must be examined before the guarantee documents are reissued. The watch must therefore be presented to our customer service. Guarantee documents can only be reissued for watches in mint condition (max. four years old) and only once per watch. Please consult an authorized Lange dealer or Lange boutique near you.

    • Each Lange watch is accompanied by “The History of Your Watch” booklet. It includes the guarantee seal or card with date of sale. The book also serves to record all changes of ownership, if desired, dedications and maintenance in writing. In this way, the history of the watch can be traced back completely at any time.

    • We would be happy to provide you with further information about your model. Simply send us an email at contact.ch@lange-soehne.com with photos of the dial side and the back of the watch as well as further details about the watch that you are familiar with.

    • If your watch has been stolen and you have already reported the loss to the police, we recommend that you forward the relevant information including the police records to us. Send the documents to the following email address: team_service@lange-soehne.com. If we receive your stolen watch, we can contact the authorities immediately.

    • One of the most beautiful and discreet personalisation options is the engraving of your initials on the balance cock. This is even possible after the purchase and can best be carried out as part of an overhaul, but we also offer this service outside of maintenance. With a new model, it is also possible to design the balance cock to your specifications on request.

In addition, individual engravings for hinged lids or case backs are also possible. We will be happy to advise you in this regard. Please contact us.

    • A tour of the manufacture takes you right through the assembly departments, where you can look over the shoulders of our watchmakers.

However, the number of annual guided tours is very limited – contact your Lange boutique or your authorized Lange dealer if you are interested in a guided tour.

    • You have the certainty of purchasing a perfect, new and genuine Lange watch when buying in our Boutiques and at authorized Lange retailers.

Here you will also be provided with the documentation for your guarantee, to be found on the first page in “The History of Your Watch” booklet, where you will also find the guarantee seal or card with the date entered at the time of purchase.

    • Lange watches are manufactured in Glashütte, Germany. Our company was re-established in 1990 by Walter Lange.

The A. Lange & Söhne brand goes back to Walter Lange’s great-grandfather, Ferdinand Adolph Lange. In 1845 he founded the Saxon precision watchmaking workshop at the Glashütte location, and so we still have an inseparable connection to our location today.

Since its re-establishment, the name A. Lange & Söhne has stood for sophisticated mechanical wristwatches that are manufactured by hand with the highest precision and passion. “Made in Glashütte” is part of our identity. That is why not only our movements are fully assembled on-site – even the individual components such as plates, bridges, springs and cocks are created in our manufacture by precision machines, with few exceptions, before they are finished by hand.

    • Depending on the material and equipment, Lange watches are available in various price categories. The prices of the current collection can be found on our website directly next to the model (for Germany in euros including VAT).

You can obtain a price list in your local currency directly from our Lange boutiques and your Lange dealer. Here you will find an overview of our sales points.
