Our exclusive gold
Since its re-establishment, our manufacture has continued to venture into unknown horological territory. The drive to evolve precision watchmaking and to constantly set new boundaries comes to the fore not only in innovative mechanical engineering but also in the field of the material used.
The patented honey gold, which is reserved for very few, exclusive models, is particularly remarkable. It is harder than other gold alloys and registered under the trademark of HONEYGOLD®. The material owes its name to the warm hue, ranging between pink and white gold.
The first three timepieces that were crafted in honey gold in 2010, were part of the “165 Years – Homage to F. A. Lange” anniversary edition, consisting of the TOURBOGRAPH “Pour le Mérite”, the LANGE 1 TOURBILLON and the 1815 MOON PHASE.
No later than 2011, the next timepiece in the 18-carat alloy was launched, the lavishly decorated RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” HANDWERKSKUNST.
As a homage to the 200th anniversary of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the 1815 “200th Anniversary F. A. Lange” was presented in the noble alloy only four years later. The timepiece combines a honey-gold case with a rare finishing technique: the solid-silver argenté-grainé dial is reminiscent of the historic observation watches and marine chronometers.
In the following years, the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE HONEYGOLD and the ZEITWERK DECIMAL STRIKE HONEYGOLD joined the ranks as well as the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL HONEYGOLD in 2019; limited to 100 watches, it boasts a self-winding movement and a perpetual calendar.
In 2020, in tribute to the 175th anniversary of Saxon precision watchmaking, a second collection by the name of “Homage to F. A. Lange” was launched. One of the watches was the TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL HONEYGOLD “Homage to F. A. Lange”, of which merely 50 pieces were crafted ‒ on account of its complexity. The 1815 RATTRAPANTE HONEYGOLD with a first-time combination of the warm-hued material and a black dial in solid silver, and the 1815 THIN HONEYGOLD with its two-part enamel dial in radiant white completed the collection.
In 2021, we presented the ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen”, exemplary of the exceptional path our manufacture has taken in the world of precision watchmaking – it unites the trailblazing design and engineering concept of the ZEITWERK watch family with the patented honey-gold case material, and the specially developed semi-transparent dial, rendering the luminous jumping numerals display visible.
In 2023, another model is added to the edition of honey-gold watches: the ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER HONEYGOLD. This unique timepiece combines the jumping numerals display with a decimal minute repeater and is limited to 30 pieces. With the push of a button, it sounds the hours, ten-minute intervals and minutes.
With the introduction of the DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL TOURBILLON in 2016, the A. Lange & Söhne engineers and watchmakers created one of the most sophisticated timepieces of the manufacture ‒ both from a technical and design point of view. In 2024, the masterpiece of Glashütte watchmaking artistry makes its debut in Lange-exclusive honey gold as a “Lumen” version, limited to 50 pieces.
The model combines three exceptional complications with useful supplementary functions: a column-wheel chronograph with a precisely jumping minute counter, a perpetual calendar with instantaneously switching displays, and a tourbillon with stop-seconds. While each complication alone already represents a technical feat, the challenge is not only to harmonise all the complex mechanisms but also to devise a well-organised, easy-to-read face.
The DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD “Lumen” puts the spotlight on the technical and aesthetic assets of the model and, for the first time, also makes them visible in the dark.
Over the centuries, Saxony’s fascination for the precious metal gold became increasingly apparent. In the course of time, the interest exhibited almost alchemistic traits; approximately 300 years ago, during one of the numerous experiments focussing on the production of gold, European porcelain was invented ‒ purely by chance.
In the scope of our continued pursuit of evolvement, the idea for a special gold alloy was born more than 10 years ago. Time-consuming research into gold alloys with a greater hardness resulted in the development of the 18-carat compound, consisting of 75 per cent pure gold with copper and zinc proportions. This accounts for the warm hue, ranging between pink and white gold that characterises the honey-gold alloy, exclusively used by our manufacture.
