Focal point: the typical Lange UP/DOWN display
The 1815 UP/DOWN focuses entirely on its eponymous function. Typical of many Lange watches, the display has a long-standing tradition in Saxon precision watchmaking. The AB (DOWN) marker represents the unwound movement, whereas AUF (UP) indicates the fully wound movement which provides a maximum power reserve of 72 hours.
The timepiece is available with a case diameter of 37.5 and 39 millimetres as well as with two dial colours. Limited to 300 pieces each, the special editions in 750 pink and white gold enrich the model range with two refined versions: thanks to the blue dial and the compact case dimensions, they endow the traditional design of the watch with a contemporary face. The slightly larger model also comes in pink or white gold and is graced with an argenté-coloured dial featuring hands in blued steel.
Traditional elements – individual stylishness
The dial of the 1815 UP/DOWN is richly detailed and boasts traditional elements of Saxon precision watchmaking. They include the prominent railway-track minute scale that elegantly frames the dial. The trefoil markers positioned at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o՚clock subtly indicate the quarter hours. Together with the lancet-shaped hands, the characteristic Arabic numerals assure optimum legibility. Thus, the 1815 UP/DOWN showcases a discrete, timeless-elegant aesthetic appeal that embodies the values of Saxon craftsmanship.
The UP/DOWN power-reserve indicator
While the power-reserve indicator is frequently paired with additional functions in other timepieces, it has the starring role in the 1815 UP/DOWN. Opposite the subsidiary seconds dial, an auxiliary dial positioned at 8 o՚clock informs the wearer how long the watch will continue to run. The display with the AUF (UP) marker for the fully wound and AB (DOWN) for the unwound movement represents a traditional hallmark of many A. Lange & Söhne watches.
The power-reserve indicator was especially useful for precision watches that were utilised for navigation and scientific purposes. It indicates the remaining power reserve and delivers a timely reminder to rewind the watch, thus assuring consistently superior rate stability.
Traditional watchmaking artistry melded with artisanal perfection
A glance through the sapphire-crystal caseback reveals the mechanical beauty of the movement. Traditional characteristic elements of many design and technical aspects include the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, the visibly integrated winding wheels embellished with solarisation as well as the gold chatons secured by blued screws and the balance cock that is manually engraved with a free-hand technique.

The manually wound manufacture calibre was assembled twice and delivers a power reserve of 72 hours. Beneath the balance cock, a classic screw balance, an indexless oscillation system and a Lange balance spring crafted in-house assure high rate accuracy. From a mechanical point of view, the UP/DOWN display is directly integrated in the movement with a space-saving planetary gear system, thus enabling a thinner silhouette of the movement with a height of only 4.6 millimetres.
